Skype – in China

I’ve begun switching over to Skype – I pay a few dollars a month for unlimited outbound calls to the USA, and the quality is better than my old Vonage account.  Interestingly, the one thing that has me wondering if I should continue is Skype’s partnership with tom.com, here in China.  Each time I sign-in, I get a popup window – that rotates thru showing pseudo porn each time I sign-in.  Since I occassionally want to use Skype at work or other professional environments, I am a bit unnerved.  Reminds me of the old days of the Internet where I could write a short script, send it to a non-geek friend, and he would click on a link for a restaurant coupon - that turned out to be window after window of x-rated material…causing him to panic and literally unplug his computer at his banking job in hysteria.

I contacted Skype support – and, naturally, Skype headquarters apparently isn’t even aware of their partnership with Tom.com – leaving the wild wild east to a lacky in Beijing or elsewhere.  Classic.

Now, if I could only stop signing in and out of Skype every few minutes…
